Denmark bans burning of the Quran

In Denmark, a bill that makes the burning of holy books and attacks on these books illegal has been passed.

Bill passed

In the vote held in the Danish Parliament, 77 members of parliament voted against the bill, while 94 members voted in favor.

According to the law passed by a majority vote, the burning of the Quran and other holy books, attacks on these books, and inappropriate behavior targeting religious values will be prohibited in the country.

Up to 2 years in prison

Those who violate the law may face fines or up to two years in prison.

For the law to enter into force, it requires the signature of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark. While attacks on the Quran have intensified in Sweden and Denmark recently, the permission granted for these provocations has been met with backlash.

Danish far-right politician and leader of the Hard Line party, Rasmus Paludan, continued his provocations of burning the Quran throughout the 2022 Easter holiday in the Swedish cities of Malmö, Norrköping, and Jönköping, as well as in the capital, Stockholm.

Paludan burned the Quran in front of Turkey's Embassy in Stockholm on January 21 and in front of Turkey's Embassy in Copenhagen on January 27.

Salwan Momika, of Iraqi origin, also burned the Quran in front of the Stockholm Mosque under police protection on June 28, which coincided with the first day of Eid al-Adha.

On July 20, in front of the Iraqi Embassy in Stockholm, and on July 31, in front of the Swedish Parliament, Momika trampled on the Quran and the Iraqi flag under police protection.

Increasing his attacks, Momika continued to burn the Quran in various locations in Stockholm under police protection on August 25, 26, 27, and 29.

Bahrami Marjan, of Iranian origin, burned the Quran under police protection on the Angbybadet beach in Stockholm on August 3.
