Digital nomad visa enters into force

In response to the remote work trend that has surged since the pandemic, Sri Lanka has implemented a digital nomad visa program. Thanks to this program, which was launched on February 1, 2026, the popular Indian Ocean island aims to host digital workers from all over the world.

With this special visa, which is valid for one year and can be easily renewed annually, applicants will be able to continue their work while living immersed in Sri Lanka's rich culture and natural beauty. Those who wish to take advantage of this opportunity must be over 18 years of age and document that they have a fixed monthly income of at least 1,700 euros (approximately 2,000 dollars or an average of 87,000 TL). For those planning to come with their families, this income requirement is maintained for up to two children, while an additional 425 euros is added to the income threshold for each additional child.

Application procedures are carried out electronically through the official website of the Department of Immigration and Emigration, and the visa application fee per person has been set at 425 euros. Among the basic conditions are that applicants must not work for any Sri Lankan company within the country and must only provide services to overseas clients. Furthermore, it is a legal requirement that applicants do not engage in any political activity and refrain from actions that would disrupt public order.

With the digital nomad visa, Sri Lanka will continue to enchant guests from different cultures with attractions such as the iconic Galle Fort, which draws 2.3 million tourists annually from around the world, the famous train route winding through lush tea plantations, national parks known for their elephants, and the magnificent 300-kilometer Pekoe Trail.

With the new visa application, Sri Lanka aims to both increase its tourism revenue and create a long-term and permanent international community on the island.
