Donald Trump pulls ahead of Joe Biden...

According to a poll released on Saturday, one day after the US President described his predecessor as "despicable" at an event in California, Donald Trump has moved ahead of US President Joe Biden—who has announced he will run for re-election in 2024—in national public opinion polls for the 2024 presidential election.

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) poll shows that Biden has the lowest approval rating of his presidency. According to the WSJ poll, Trump received 47 percent approval, while Biden received 43 percent approval. 

Biden will be at age on election day

Although Biden has expressed his desire to run for a second term, many in the Democratic Party want him to withdraw from the race, fearing that his advanced age will alienate voters. Biden will be 81 on election day, and if he wins next year, he will be 86 after spending 8 years in the White House. 

Both candidates are dealing with criminal cases

US President Biden's son, Hunter Biden, has been charged with 9 tax-related counts in California, which creates additional obstacles on the path to Biden's re-election. On the other hand, Trump is also in jeopardy due to 4 simultaneous criminal cases filed against him, some of which are related to attempts to overturn Biden's 2020 victory. 

Although the results signal that alarm bells are ringing for the Democrats, the WSJ notes that while the figures show many Democrats are currently dissatisfied with Biden, they might still support him on election day, especially if Trump becomes the Republican nominee.
