Donald Trump takes Colorado 'disqualification' ruling to the US Supreme Court
Donald Trump, who is preparing for the presidential race in November, has appealed the decision in Colorado that prevents him from participating in the elections to the US Supreme Court.
Former US President Donald Trump is dealing with lawsuits and legal rulings against him while preparing for the presidential election race.
TAKEN TO THE SUPREME COURT
Trump has taken the decision made by the Colorado Supreme Court in December, which accused him of playing a role in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot and ruled that he could not participate in the state's primary elections as a result, to the US Supreme Court.
Trump's lawyers argued that no state court could prevent a presidential candidate from appearing on the ballot and that the Colorado Supreme Court had misinterpreted the relevant constitutional articles.
The US Supreme Court is expected to take up the application and reach a decision in the near future.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Following the state of Colorado, Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows also ruled on December 28, 2023, that Trump could not participate in the Republican Party's primary elections to be held in the state due to his role in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
In line with the decisions, Trump's name will not appear on the ballots in the primary elections to be held in both states on March 5, where Republican candidates will compete.
The final decision regarding the election race in the two states will be made by the US Supreme Court.
