The draft resolution submitted by Malta was adopted in the 15-member UNSC with 12 "yes" votes against 3 "abstentions."

Following the vote, US Permanent Representative to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield stated, "There is no excuse for not condemning Hamas's terrorist activities. Hamas triggered this conflict."

UK Permanent Representative to the UN Barbara Woodward stated that it is impossible to comprehend the suffering and loss experienced by the Palestinian people, emphasizing, "This resolution will save lives. We need to act together so that more aid can enter quickly."

Noting that they were saddened by the fact that the resolution did not explicitly condemn "Hamas's terrorist activities," Woodward stated that they abstained for this reason.

Woodward said the resolution is important because it allows the UNSC to speak with a single voice and paves the way for aid delivery.

Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) Vassily Nebenzia stated that while there were major shortcomings in the resolution submitted by Malta, they did not veto it because it emphasizes the humanitarian dimension.

Noting that the main shortcoming is the lack of a call for an immediate ceasefire in the resolution, Nebenzia said this should be the top priority.

Nebenzia remarked, "Temporary pauses only allow military activities to return with greater intensity."
