Draft resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza voted on

US Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Robert Wood had announced before the "immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip" vote expected at the United Nations (UN) Security Council that the US did not support calls for such a step.

Following UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres invoking Article 99 of the UN Charter for the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, the UN Security Council met urgently today. A statement came from the US before the "immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip" demand was expected to be voted on in the Council.

US Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Robert Wood stated in his address to the council that the US did not support calls for such a step, saying, "This will only plant the seeds for the next war. Because Hamas has no desire to see a lasting peace."

"ISRAEL WILL BE GIVEN A LICENSE"

United Arab Emirates (UAE) Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Mohamed Abushahab said in the council, "Today this council will vote and will have the opportunity to respond to the deafening calls from across the world to end this violence."

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, in a statement to reporters in Washington DC, the capital of the US, had stated that if the security council did not adopt the resolution, "Israel would be given a license to continue its massacre against Palestinians in Gaza."
