ECHR convicts Greece
The European Court of Human Rights has reached a verdict in a case filed in 2016 against Greece by three Syrian irregular migrants living in Sweden, on behalf of their relative who was wounded by gunfire and subsequently lost their life.
Ruling that Greece violated Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) regarding the right to life, the ECHR ordered Greece to pay 80 thousand euros in compensation to the applicants.
Greek Coast Guard teams had opened fire 13 times on September 22, 2014, to stop a boat carrying irregular migrants off the coast of Pserimos (Keçi Adası).
GREECE HAD BEEN SENTENCED TO PAY 330 THOUSAND EUROS IN COMPENSATION
As a result of the gunfire, 2 Syrian citizens were wounded, and one of them lost their life shortly after.
Last year, the ECHR also sentenced Greece to pay 330 thousand euros in compensation on the grounds that it did nothing to rescue 11 people who drowned off the coast of Farmakonisi (Bulamaç Adası) in 2014 and failed to conduct an effective investigation to clarify the incident.
In a statement regarding the ruling, the New Left in Greece stated, "Today will be remembered as a shameful day for Greece."
The statement, which noted that the Mediterranean has turned into a graveyard, recorded that "the fueling of xenophobia and racist instincts" prevents finding a solution to the migration problem.
