ECHR fines Greece over treatment of asylum-seeking child
The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has ordered Greece to pay 8,000 euros, ruling that an unaccompanied child seeking asylum was subjected to treatment contrary to the European Convention on Human Rights.
The ECHR, which ruled that Greece violated Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights regarding the prohibition of inhuman or degrading treatment, ordered the payment of 8,000 euros in compensation to the 16-year-old applicant, O.R.
O.R., an unaccompanied Afghan national, was deprived of access to security, shelter, hygiene, food, and care for 6 months in 2018 in Athens, the capital of Greece, where he had applied for asylum.
On January 17, the ECHR also convicted Greece for the actions of the Greek Coast Guard, which opened fire on Syrian irregular migrants off the coast of Pserimos (Keçi Adası) in 2014.
Ruling that Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights regarding the right to life had been violated, the ECHR had ordered Greece to pay 80,000 euros in compensation to the applicants.
