EU imposes restrictions on visa-free travel to Europe

According to the EU, certain restrictions are necessary for Europe's security following Russia's invasion of Ukraine and tensions in the Middle East.

VISA EXEMPTION MAY BE SUSPENDED

The new regulation, presented to members of the European Parliament and the European Commission on Wednesday, provides for the "easy suspension" of visa exemptions granted to non-EU countries if risks to European countries increase significantly.

THE BILL ALSO CONCERNS TURKEY

The bill allows EU countries to quickly suspend visa-free travel rights granted to third countries for up to 36 months if they deem it necessary. Currently, this period is limited to 27 months and takes longer to implement. The new legal regulation targets Balkan countries neighboring the EU, such as Albania and Serbia. Serbia, in particular, is seen as a significant stepping stone for illegal migration originating from Turkey.
