EU prepares to add Iran's Revolutionary Guard to terror list

Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani stated in his remarks before the EU Foreign Ministers' summit held in Brussels that they are on a positive path in discussions regarding the addition of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard to the European Union's list of terrorist organizations.

Responding to a question regarding the Iran agenda, Tajani said, "We are moving toward a political agreement to include the Revolutionary Guard on the list of terrorist organizations. A political decision will be made today, and then a concrete decision will be taken in the coming weeks. However, I think there is a great convergence among all countries after what has happened in recent weeks. This is unacceptable."

Tajani emphasized that the Revolutionary Guard should be held responsible for attacks against Iranian civilians and advocated for the implementation of new sanctions. He underscored their support for including the Revolutionary Guard on the list of terrorist organizations.

Regarding allegations that US security teams would provide support at the table rather than on the field during the Winter Olympic Games starting next week in Milan-Cortina, and that the Revolutionary Guard might accompany Iranian athletes, Tajani said, "I do not have any such information regarding the presence of the Revolutionary Guard in the Iranian delegation at the Milan-Cortina Olympics."

Regarding the request for EU aid for the regions of Calabria, Sicily, and Sardinia to compensate for the damage caused by Hurricane "Harry" that occurred in some parts of Italy last week, he stated that receiving support from the European Solidarity Fund is on the agenda.

Tajani also emphasized that following the death of 40 people in a fire at the Crans-Montana Ski Resort in Switzerland on New Year's Eve, Italy has recalled its Ambassador to Bern to Rome for consultations due to the decision to release the business owner, Jacques Moretti; however, he stressed that there is no diplomatic tension with Switzerland and that the incident must be examined in all its aspects before the justice system.
