EU reacts to US customs duties
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that they will evaluate the US decision to impose a 25 percent customs duty on automobile imports alongside other expected measures, and that they will protect their economic interests against them.
Von der Leyen issued a statement following the US announcement on import automobile tariffs.
"I am deeply saddened by the US decision to impose customs duties on European automotive exports," von der Leyen said, noting that the automotive industry is a driver of innovation, competitiveness, and high-quality employment through deeply integrated supply chains on both sides of the Atlantic.
Pointing out that tariffs mean taxes and that these are bad for businesses and consumers in both the EU and the US, von der Leyen stated, "We will now evaluate this announcement together with other measures the US anticipates in the coming days."
Stating that they will continue to seek a solution through negotiation while protecting the EU's economic interests, von der Leyen remarked, "As a strong community of 27 member states, we will protect our workers, businesses, and consumers across the EU in a unified manner."
US President Donald Trump announced that they would impose a 25 percent customs duty on all automobiles not produced in the US.
