According to a study conducted by the European Union (EU) in 13 member states, Black people face the most discrimination in Germany and Austria.
The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA), based in Vienna, Austria, has published a report titled "Being Black in the EU."
The report notes that Black people of African descent living in 13 EU member states "face the most discrimination in Germany and Austria."
More than 6,700 people of African descent living in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden were surveyed in 2022 regarding the discrimination they faced in their respective countries due to factors such as skin color, origin, and religion.
In Germany, 77 percent of participants stated that they had been subjected to discrimination in the last 5 years. With this rate, it was determined that Black people in Europe face the most discrimination in Germany.
In Austria, 76 percent of participants reported having been subjected to discrimination. Accordingly, Austria became the second country in Europe where Black people face the most discrimination.
On the other hand, while the rate of those who reported the discrimination they faced in the last year in Germany was 9 percent, this rate was found to be 5 percent in Austria.
47 percent of all participants from the 13 countries stated that they had been subjected to discrimination in the 5 years prior to 2022.
FRA Director Michael O'Flaherty stated in the foreword of the report that "the true extent of racism is shocking and shameful."
