Famous American climber scales skyscraper without ropes: Streamed live on Netflix

World-renowned climber Alex Honnold has scaled the Taipei 101 skyscraper in Taiwan without using ropes or safety equipment. Reaching the summit of the 508-meter building in approximately 1 hour and 35 minutes, Honnold became the first athlete to climb the building without ropes, unlike the 2004 climb performed by French climber Alain Robert, who used ropes.

STREAMED LIVE ON NETFLIX

The climb was broadcast live by the US-based streaming platform Netflix. As Honnold ascended to the top of the 101-story giant structure, he navigated his climb through various challenges. In the first section, he managed to pass the lower part of the building, which consists of 113-meter-high glass and steel construction panels, by using the edge railings.

Honnold then faced a tough struggle to overcome the 274-meter section known as the "bamboo boxes," which tilts at an angle of up to 7 degrees. This section consisted of 8 blocks and posed a significant obstacle for the climber. However, despite the difficulties, Honnold continued without stopping and successfully managed to pass this part.

REACHED THE SUMMIT IN THE FINAL STAGE

The final stage of his climb continued up to the 121-meter spire. Here, climbing through areas where gripping was extremely difficult, Honnold reached the tip of the building's mast and took a selfie at the top to crown his achievement.

Alex Honnold is a climber known for "free soloing," which involves long-distance rock wall climbing without rope safety. In 2017, he achieved a major success by climbing the El Capitan rock wall in the US Yosemite National Park without ropes.
