Famous chip brand being recalled from shelves
Carrefour has decided to urgently recall a chip product sold in Belgium due to its high acrylamide content. Citizens have been warned not to consume this product.
The Belgian Food Safety Agency (FAVV) has announced that "Chips Sticks Paprika Flavored" chips under the Carrefour Sensation brand are being withdrawn from the market due to high levels of acrylamide. This 150-gram product had been on sale since March 28, 2025, and consumers are advised to return it as it poses a health risk.
Acrylamide is known as a chemical compound that forms when starch-containing foods are cooked at high temperatures and can lead to health problems in the long term. Stating that this situation threatens public health, the FAVV emphasized that consumers should absolutely not consume this product.
Belgium's health research institute, Sciensano, drawing on findings from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), highlighted the potential carcinogenic effects of acrylamide. It was also noted that this substance can convert in the body into a metabolite called glycidamide, which can damage DNA, and that some neurotoxic effects have also been observed.
The FAVV has requested that individuals who purchased the product return the chips to the nearest Carrefour store. Furthermore, it was reported that all stocks on the market will be urgently recalled. The EAN code for the recalled product is 5400101098541, the lot number is 59B30603, and the expiration date is August 29, 2025.
