First contact between Putin and al-Shara: 'I am ready to support'
The Kremlin announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone call with the leader of the Syrian Transitional Government, Ahmed al-Shara, marking his first contact with the new administration in Damascus.
According to a statement from the Kremlin, Putin and al-Shara evaluated the situation in Syria during their phone conversation.

The Kremlin statement said, "Vladimir Putin wished Ahmed al-Shara success in the tasks that the country's new administration must carry out, within the framework of friendly and mutually beneficial cooperation, while keeping in mind the interests of the Syrian people, who have historical ties with Russia."

Stating that Putin and al-Shara evaluated the current situation in Syria in detail, the Kremlin noted, "Russia reiterated its firm stance on defending the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the Syrian state.
In this context, the importance of measures to be taken for a sustainable normalization process, including the establishment of an active dialogue among Syrians with the participation of leading political forces and ethnic and religious groups in society, was highlighted. Vladimir Putin expressed that they are always ready to provide all kinds of support, including offering humanitarian aid to Syrians, to improve the socio-economic situation in Syria."
