Former Austrian Chancellor Kurz receives 8-month suspended prison sentence for perjury

Former Chancellor Sebastian Kurz has been sentenced to prison in Austria.

In a hearing held in Vienna, Kurz, who was accused of giving false testimony during an investigation into government corruption allegations, was given an 8-month suspended prison sentence.

EMPHASIZED HIS INNOCENCE

During the 4-month trial at the Vienna Criminal Court, Kurz, whom prosecutors accused of giving false testimony during an investigation into his role in the establishment of a company called OeBAG in 2020, stated that the case was politically motivated and emphasized that he was innocent.

Sebastian Kurz, who was dubbed the “wunderkind” of the Austrian People’s Party and served as chancellor in 2017 before returning to power in 2020, resigned in 2021 following a separate investigation into bribery allegations.
