France issues declaration against the arrest of İmamoğlu: Emphasis on law and freedom of expression
Reactions from around the world continue to pour in regarding the arrest of CHP's presidential candidate and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu. France has issued a declaration against the arrest of İmamoğlu, stating that the decision is an 'attack on democracy.'
The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a statement criticizing the arrest of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu. The ministry characterized this development as a 'serious attack on democracy,' underlining that Turkey has commitments to the Council of Europe and the European Union (EU).
The statement said, 'Respect for the rights of elected representatives of the opposition, as well as freedom of assembly and expression, are fundamental elements of the rule of law.' The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that France is deeply concerned by the arrest of İmamoğlu.
French Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Pascal Confavreux emphasized their support for İmamoğlu and used the following expressions:
''As a member of the Council of Europe and a candidate country for accession to the European Union, Turkey has freely made commitments in this area. Respect for these commitments is a central element in our relations and in the relations between Turkey and the European Union. Respect for the rights of elected members of the opposition, as well as freedom of assembly and expression, are cornerstones of the rule of law.''

Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot shared the ministry's statement from its official X account on his personal account.
François Bechieau, a member of the Progressives Movement, opposed the decision in a message he posted on X, writing the following:
''No to Erdoğan's autocratic rule in Turkey! Full support for Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor İmamoğlu! We demand his release!''
