Fuel alarm in Russia: Litre limit introduced, sales in canisters banned

Due to problems with fuel supply in Russia's Irkutsk region, the regional administration has declared a "state of high alert." With this decision, new practices have been put into effect to reduce congestion at gas stations and balance the current supply.

Irkutsk Governor Igor Kobzev stated in a written announcement that the primary goal of the measures taken is to mitigate the effects of insufficient fuel shipments to the region and to bring the congestion at gas stations under control.

50-LITRE DAILY LIMIT PER VEHICLE

Governor Kobzev announced that a maximum of 50 litres of fuel will be sold per vehicle daily at Rosneft-owned gas stations.

Stating that other gas stations may set lower sales limits based on their own capabilities, Kobzev also announced that the sale of fuel in canisters has been completely banned.

REMOTE WORK RECOMMENDATION FOR INSTITUTIONS

Within the scope of the measures taken, institutions and organizations not directly linked to the basic needs of the public have been advised to switch to a remote working system.

The regional administration reported that this practice aims to reduce both traffic and fuel demand.

SECURITY FORCES TO BE DEPLOYED AT GAS STATIONS

Governor Kobzev announced that personnel from the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Russian National Guard will be deployed to patrol gas stations.

It was stated that the officers will maintain public order in queues that may form at the stations and will conduct inspections to prevent fuel sales that violate the measures taken.

THE CAUSE OF THE FUEL CRISIS: ATTACKS ON REFINERIES

Russian officials state that the difficulties in fuel supply in the country stem from the fact that many facilities have been taken into maintenance following Ukraine's drone attacks on oil refineries in Russia.

The Russian government continues to implement sales and export restrictions from time to time in order to ensure stability in the fuel market.

On the other hand, it was reported that various restrictions on fuel sales are in effect not only in the Irkutsk region but also in approximately 20 regions, including the capital Moscow and St. Petersburg.
