According to a report by The Associated Press, 14.5% of voters in the Democratic primary cast an 'uncommitted' vote. According to the report, this figure corresponds to 33,000 voters. Commentaries in the US media suggest that voters who do not support Biden are reacting to the war in Gaza. Before the primaries, a group of Democrats calling themselves 'Listen to Michigan' had called on those participating in the election to cast an uncommitted vote, citing Biden's stance on the war in Gaza as the reason.
Following the primary, the 'Listen to Michigan' group argued that their call for uncommitted voting was a success. No comment was made by the Biden camp regarding the protest votes. However, experts in the US suggest that Biden may not be able to continue US policies in Gaza much longer due to voter pressure.
TRUMP CANNOT END INTRA-PARTY OPPOSITION
On the other hand, Donald Trump surpassed his rival Nikki Haley in the Republican primary in Michigan. With 98.57% of the votes counted so far, Trump left his rival behind by receiving 68.17% of the votes. While support for Haley remained at 26.54%, 'uncommitted' votes also became the main focus of discussions in the Republican primaries.
According to a report by CNN, Republicans who do not support Trump's candidacy could be decisive in critical states. Seven states in the US, including Michigan, are defined as 'critical' due to the volatility of their preferences in elections. The results in Michigan led to comments that both names will struggle in the presidential race despite winning the primaries.
