Genocide case against Israel to be heard on January 11-12

The date for the first hearing of the genocide case filed by South Africa against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) has been set.

Clayson Monyela, spokesperson for South Africa's Department of International Relations and Cooperation, stated on his social media account, "To be clear. The ICJ has scheduled the hearing for the case brought by South Africa. The hearing will take place in The Hague on January 11-12, 2024. Our lawyers are currently preparing for this."

Israeli Government Spokesperson Eylon Levy, in a statement regarding the case, indicated that Israel would appear before the ICJ in The Hague, Netherlands, to challenge South Africa's accusations, stating, "Israel will appear before the International Court of Justice in The Hague to dispel South Africa's absurd blood libel.

We assure the leaders of South Africa that history will not be merciful to you when it judges you," he said. Levy also alleged, without providing details, that South Africa is complicit in crimes committed against Israelis.

FILED A CASE AT THE ICJ

On December 29, South Africa filed a case at the ICJ against Israel for its attacks on the Gaza Strip, arguing that it violated its obligations under the Genocide Convention adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ), which settles disputes between countries, is known as the UN's civil court, and both South Africa and Israel are among the countries subject to the ICJ.
