German Interior Minister reacts to speculation regarding the return of Syrians

In a statement on the social media platform X, Faeser said, "Many refugees who have found protection in Germany now have the hope of returning to their homeland in Syria. The situation in Syria is currently very uncertain. Therefore, it is not possible to estimate concrete options at this moment. In such a volatile and unpredictable situation, speculating on this matter would be irresponsible."

Minister Faeser also defended the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) decision to freeze ongoing asylum procedures until the situation in Syria becomes clear.

Faeser also noted that the end of the Assad regime's oppression is a great relief for many people who have been subjected to torture, murder, and terror.

There are approximately 975 thousand Syrians in Germany. Of these, about 760 thousand are living in Germany with refugee or asylum seeker status.
