Germany to increase sanctions if Russia does not accept ceasefire
Europe is preparing to impose new sanctions if Russia does not accept a ceasefire in Ukraine. Berlin has set a midnight deadline, while a potential meeting between Putin and Zelensky in Istanbul is on the agenda.
Germany has announced that Europe will impose new sanctions if Russia does not accept an unconditional 30-day ceasefire in the conflict in Ukraine. In a statement from Berlin, it was said, "Time is running out. There is still time until the end of the day. If a ceasefire is not achieved, Europe will begin its preparations for sanctions."
Last Saturday, the leaders of four major European countries traveled to Kyiv and demanded that Moscow declare an immediate ceasefire.
CRITICAL MEETING IN ISTANBUL
Russian President Vladimir Putin did not directly reject this call but offered a different proposal. Putin stated that he could hold direct talks with Ukraine in Istanbul and that this meeting could pave the way for a potential ceasefire.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that he would personally go to Istanbul to meet with Putin and would wait for him there. The Kremlin has not yet responded to this proposal. Putin and Zelensky have not met directly since December 2019.
