Guterres condemns Israel's targeting of Beirut
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly criticized Israel's airstrike on the capital, Beirut, drawing attention to the rising tension in the region and calling on all parties to exercise restraint.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has reacted sharply to the airstrike carried out by Israel in the Lebanese capital, Beirut. In a statement released via social media, Guterres emphasized that the attack was conducted despite the parties having reached a ceasefire.
Reminding that tensions are rising in the region where the conflict is taking place, Guterres noted that while the expected diplomatic developments between the US and Iran offer hope for peace, military interventions could negatively impact this process. Pointing out that the attack occurred at a critical juncture for a resolution between the two countries, Guterres stated that he "strongly" condemns it.
Touching upon the potential damage of the conflicts to the global economy, Guterres noted that ensuring stability is of vital importance for both the countries in the region and the world economy. He expressed that he expects positive results from the diplomatic initiatives of the US and Iran.
Finally, calling on the parties to refrain from steps that would escalate the tension, the UN Secretary-General reminded the international community that it also bears responsibility in the face of the incident.
It had been reported that the Israeli army carried out airstrikes on Beirut and some targets in southern Lebanon despite the existence of a ceasefire agreement, and that at least 10 people lost their lives in the incident.
