The Israeli Security Cabinet approved Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's proposal to occupy Gaza City on August 8, and Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz gave the green light to the plan on August 20. In a recent statement made by Israeli Army Spokesperson Effie Defrin, it was stated that the first phase of the planned attack on Gaza City had begun. Stating that preliminary operations were being conducted for the attacks aimed at occupying Gaza City, Defrin announced that control had been established in the outer neighborhoods of the city. Israel's move to occupy Gaza, coming at a time when Hamas had accepted the ceasefire proposal from Qatar and Egypt, had caused reactions. Comments were made that Israel was deliberately undermining a potential ceasefire. Israel's occupation plan had also drawn reactions from the international community.
