The Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, launched a comprehensive attack on the morning of October 7, citing the need to "respond to Israel's continuous violations against Palestinians and their sacred values, especially the Al-Aqsa Mosque," while the Israeli army began an intense aerial bombardment of the Gaza Strip. Israel announced that since October 7, 1,200 Israelis, including 363 soldiers—44 of whom died in clashes within the Gaza Strip and 6 on the northern border with Lebanon—have been killed, and 5,132 people have been injured. According to Israel, there are 239 Israeli captives in the hands of the Qassam Brigades.
