Hantavirus detected in passenger evacuated from MV Hondius ship

The hantavirus outbreak that erupted on the luxury cruise ship MV Hondius has crossed the ship's borders, turning into an international health alert. The ship, where 3 people lost their lives due to the virus while sailing from Argentina to Cabo Verde, had docked at the Port of Granadilla in Spain's Canary Islands. The first report of a positive case among the passengers evacuated from the ship and sent to their home countries has come from the US.

BIOLOGICAL ISOLATION MEASURES TAKEN IN THE US

In a statement made by the US Department of Health and Human Services, it was confirmed that a citizen who returned to the country on an evacuation flight tested positive. It was stated that a second passenger on the same flight was showing mild symptoms. While it was noted that both passengers traveled in special biological isolation units as a precaution, all 17 US citizens on the plane were taken to a health facility in Nebraska for detailed clinical evaluation.

It was reported that the other 7 passengers who returned to their states are being kept under observation by local health units, and that there is also a British citizen among those evacuated. Evacuation procedures for the other passengers and crew on the ship, which is being held at the port in the Canary Islands, continue under strict security measures.
