Harvard president resigns
Harvard University President Claudine Gay has resigned after facing pressure for characterizing protests against Israel on campus as falling under the scope of 'freedom of speech'.
In a written statement announcing her resignation, Gay stated that she made this decision so that the university could continue to pursue its goals independently of the recent controversies. According to AA's report, Gay did not address the debates regarding pro-Palestine demonstrations held on campus or the subsequent session she attended in the US Congress where antisemitism was discussed.
Reports in the US media highlighted that Gay faced intense backlash, particularly from pro-Israel groups, after she evaluated protests against Israel within the scope of 'freedom of speech', and that the pressure increased following her responses to questions during the Congressional hearing she attended on December 5, 2023, with commentary suggesting that the former president failed to manage this process well.
