The Financial Times reported that Benjamin was removed from his post after the incident, which occurred during an official trip to the states of Durango and Sinaloa in April, caused widespread repercussions.

In a statement made by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, it was stated, "We are aware of the incident and have taken the necessary actions."

In the footage shared on social media with the caption, "He dares to joke in a context where drug traffickers commit murders every day in Mexico," Benjamin is seen pointing the assault rifle in his hand at a local embassy employee whose face is obscured in the video.
