Historic move from the US to Syria

US President Donald Trump announced in an official letter sent to his Syrian counterpart Ahmed al-Shara on Wednesday that Syria would be removed from the list of state sponsors of terrorism. According to reports, Trump's letter was delivered to the Syrian delegation following critical contacts held in Ankara.

In his written message, Trump promised to remove all obstacles to Syria's development, noting that these steps would be implemented in a very short time. Trump also stated that American companies are eager to invest in the Syrian market.

The decision will not go into effect automatically. It is expected that the restrictions on Syria will be officially lifted after the US Congress reviews the decision for 45 days. Thus, the financial sanctions, defense export restrictions, and foreign aid barriers imposed by the US on Syria could be lifted.

Syrian Central Bank Governor Safwat Raslan stated in an assessment on his Telegram account that this move by Washington would accelerate the flow of investment into his country and pave the way for Syria's reintegration into the global financial system.

In the previous year, Trump had abandoned the sanctions program imposed against Syria that isolated the country from international financial markets.

In parallel with this development, which closely concerns economic and political balances in the Middle East, it is stated that some major companies in Saudi Arabia are making multi-billion dollar investment plans, and preparations for financial aid are continuing in other Gulf countries as well.

Trump's letter contained notable praise for Syrian leader Ahmed al-Shara. Ahmed al-Shara had commanded the Al-Qaeda-linked Nusra Front in Syria before 2016, and subsequently led a new coalition against the Bashar al-Assad administration by bringing together Islamist opposition groups in 2024.
