According to a report by Reuters citing The Times, the UK is preparing to officially recognize Palestine as a state in the coming days. It was reported that this critical decision would be announced immediately after US President Donald Trump completes his official visit.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated in July that they would take action if Israel did not take steps to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and did not agree to a ceasefire in the ongoing war with Hamas.

REACTION FROM ISRAEL

Israel, for its part, argues that such recognition decisions would amount to a "reward" for Hamas. It is stated that France, Canada, and Australia are also considering similar steps alongside Israel.

TRUMP'S VISIT AND THE US STANCE

The Times reported that the UK would make an official announcement after Trump completes his visit to London on Thursday. The UK Foreign Office left questions regarding the matter unanswered.

During his second official visit in July, Trump had stated that such a move would not bother him. However, the US administration has since declared its clear opposition to its European allies recognizing Palestine.

It is also noted that some groups within the Labour Party are pressuring Starmer to pursue a tougher policy against Israel. Starmer had previously stated that if Israel did not take concrete steps, the UK would recognize Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly.
