Historic process begins at the Vatican: Preparations for the new Pope are complete

Following the death of Pope Francis, the spiritual leader of the Catholic world, on April 21, all eyes turned to the Vatican and the search for the new leader of the Catholic world. Workers at the Vatican have begun installing the symbolic chimney on the roof of the Sistine Chapel ahead of the papal election to be held on May 7.

ALL EYES ON THE SMOKE FROM THE CHIMNEY

After the new Pope is elected by the cardinals, black and white smoke will signal the result to the world during the election process. If a new pope is not elected after the cardinals cast their votes, the ballots will be burned here. Black smoke will rise from the chimney after every round in which a pope is not elected. When white smoke emerges from the chimney, it will mean a new pope has been chosen.

According to Vatican records, there were 252 cardinals worldwide as of December 31, 2024. However, 114 cardinals over the age of 80 will be unable to vote due to a rule introduced in 1975. Cardinals will be required to remain in the Vatican throughout the election, and communication with the outside world will be prohibited.
