The Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen announced that they targeted facilities belonging to the national oil company Aramco in the Saudi Arabian capital, Riyadh, with ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree claimed in a written statement that Saudi Arabia had carried out 60 airstrikes in the last 24 hours on the capital, Sanaa, and several other regions under Houthi control.
Saree alleged that the number of Saudi Arabian airstrikes on Yemen since September 3 had reached 1,410, and stated that in response, Aramco facilities in Riyadh were targeted with a large number of ballistic missiles and UAVs.
The statement claimed that fires broke out and smoke rose from the targeted locations. The Houthis also threatened that attacks against Saudi Arabia would continue.
Yemen has been dragged into a civil war since the Houthis seized control of the capital, Sanaa, and several provinces in September 2014. The Saudi-led Arab Coalition has been supporting the internationally recognized Yemeni government since March 2015.
While it is noted that clashes between government forces and the Houthis have recently intensified in Yemen, the Houthis maintain that they carry out missile and UAV attacks against Saudi Arabia as a response to the attacks launched against them.
