Hungarian Parliament approves Sweden's NATO membership

The Hungarian parliament has voted in favor of Sweden's NATO membership.

The vote brings an end to months of uncertainty and diplomatic friction, nearly two years after historically neutral Sweden applied to join NATO.

The vote, which was decided during a meeting between Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orbán on Friday, took place today in Budapest. The leaders of the two countries set aside their differences and stated that they were "ready to die for each other."

MILITARY AGREEMENT

The two countries also signed a new military agreement at a joint press conference held in the Hungarian capital, in which Sweden pledged to sell four new Gripen fighter jets in addition to the 14 previously sold.

Turkey approved Sweden's NATO application last month, leaving Hungary as the final country to make the decision.

Sweden's application to join NATO had previously been delayed due to objections from Turkey and Hungary.
