Hungarian Prime Minister Orban warns EU over Ukraine

Hungary continues to oppose Ukraine's EU membership. In a statement, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that ahead of the final EU Summit of the year, to be held tomorrow and Friday in Brussels, Belgium, his country would maintain its stance against Ukraine beginning EU accession negotiations.

"THE EU IS ABOUT TO MAKE A TERRIBLE MISTAKE"

Emphasizing that Ukraine's goal should be a strategic partnership rather than full EU membership, Orban stated that the issue of Ukraine's membership in the bloc should be removed from the agenda of this week's EU Summit, as Hungary will not approve the start of negotiations for Ukraine.

Orban said, "The EU is about to make a terrible mistake. Even if all 26 other members of the union are going to make such a mistake, we must prevent this mistake."

Arguing that a "strategic partnership" should be offered to Ukraine, Orban stated, "If we want to support Ukraine, let's send a geostrategic signal. But this cannot be membership."

Touching on the possibility of Hungary leaving the EU, Orban said he does not desire to leave the bloc, adding that he would prefer "to take control of Brussels instead and have all of Europe be like Hungary."
