Iran calls on UN following US attack

Amir Saeid Iravani, Iran's Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), has requested that the UN Security Council (UNSC) hold an "emergency session" to address the US attack on his country. The stated reason for the request is to "examine and condemn" the attack.

According to information reported by CNN, Iravani stated in an official letter sent to the UNSC that the attack carried out by the Washington administration constitutes a "serious threat to regional and international peace and security."

Iravani argued that the attacks took place "under the supervision" of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), stating that this situation is clearly in violation of the United Nations Charter and the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

The representative stated that this step is incompatible with international law and called for "the necessary measures to be taken to examine and condemn this illegal act, and to ensure that those responsible do not go unpunished."

US President Donald Trump had recently announced that they had carried out airstrikes against three separate nuclear facilities in Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan.

HOW DID THE ISRAEL-IRAN WAR BEGIN?

The comprehensive wave of attacks launched by Israel on June 13 targeted many strategic points in Iran. In addition to nuclear facilities, headquarters housing high-ranking military officials were also struck.

In the attacks, the Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, the Commander-in-Chief of the Revolutionary Guards, and 9 nuclear physicists, including prominent scientists, lost their lives.

In a statement on June 21, the Iranian Ministry of Health reported that 430 civilians had lost their lives and more than 3,500 people had been injured in the Israeli attacks.

The Israeli side also announced that 24 people had died and 1,272 people had been injured in the attacks to which Iran responded. Following these developments, many countries, led by Turkey, issued statements condemning Israel's attacks.
