Born in 1968 in Elmira, New York, Dan Kane began his military career as an F-16 pilot. He served in the 'Operation Inherent Resolve' against ISIS between 2018-2019 and subsequently worked as a senior military advisor at the CIA from 2021 to 2024.

Kane, who was not well-known in Washington circles, came to the fore when he was nominated for Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff by Trump. It is stated that many members of Congress had to conduct research on him after hearing of his nomination. It is known that Trump previously stated to the press that he first met Kane in 2018 during the fight against ISIS and was impressed by his ambitious approach that "the organization would be defeated in one week, not two years."
