Israel's decision on the so-called Armenian genocide

In a first in Israeli history, the term "genocide" regarding the Armenian deportations during the First World War has been officially adopted. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar announced on social media that the decision was passed unanimously in parliament.

In his statement, Minister Sa'ar said, "It is never too late to do the right thing," and noted that with this step, Israel has joined the ranks of "countries that fulfill their moral duty." He also thanked Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and all cabinet members who contributed to the process.

Following the decision, Israel has joined the countries that characterize the Armenian deportations implemented by the Ottoman administration during the First World War years as "genocide."

Israel's decision to recognize the Armenian genocide claims appears likely to bring new debates in its relations with regional countries, particularly Turkey.

On the other hand, there are comments in the international public sphere that this recognition decision by Israel was taken in the shadow of the "genocide" accusations directed at it due to the military operations it is conducting in Gaza.

In particular, many countries such as South Africa and human rights organizations criticize the Tel Aviv government for committing grave violations against civilians in Gaza. The Israeli administration, however, categorically rejects all these accusations.
