Israel strikes facility used for chemical weapons production in Damascus: Israel enters Syria after 51 years
Following the end of the Assad administration, Israel has intensified its attacks on military zones in Syria. It is alleged that Israel most recently struck a facility used for chemical weapons production. With these strikes, Israel has entered Syria for the first time in 51 years.
Israel has struck the Syrian Scientific Studies and Research Center located in the Barzeh district, north of Damascus. This center was known as a facility where Bashar al-Assad's chemical weapons program was allegedly conducted.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights stated that the Israeli strike targeted the Scientific Research Center located in the Barzeh area.
A senior Israeli official speaking to Reuters said that an area in the Barzeh district north of Damascus, which also housed an office of the Syrian Scientific Studies and Research Center that managed Assad's chemical weapons program, was targeted.
Israeli media reported that 150 targets were struck in Syria.
ALLEGATIONS OF CHEMICAL WEAPONS PRODUCTION
The US and Israel had stated that the Syrian Scientific Studies and Research Center was a scientific research facility used by the Syrian regime to develop chemical weapons.
Under an agreement reached between the US and Russia in 2013, Syria had agreed to destroy its chemical weapons arsenal.
The center had been described by the Syrian government as a civilian research center.
