Israeli army prepares to mobilize 450,000 reservists
The Israeli military has begun preparations to mobilize 450,000 reservists in the event that a potential ground operation into Lebanon expands. This request is expected to be submitted to the government shortly and subsequently approved.
Escalating tensions in northern Israel and along the Lebanese border have brought the possibility of military mobilization to the forefront. It has been reported that the Israeli army intends to call up 450,000 reservists to meet additional personnel needs should a new ground operation occur. To this end, the military command will submit its formal request to the government in the near future.
RESERVE SOLDIER LIMIT HIGHLIGHTED
Although the number of reservists requested by the army is as high as 450,000, the maximum number of reservists currently eligible to be called up is capped at 260,000. This upper limit was set by a government decision at the beginning of the year to alleviate the burden on the army in combat zones. In other words, additional legislative adjustments are required to conscript a number of reservists exceeding the current limit in the short term.
OPERATIONS AGAINST LEBANON CONTINUE
The escalation of tensions was triggered by rocket fire from Lebanon into Israel on March 2, which set off sirens. Following this attack, the Israeli army launched comprehensive air and naval operations across various regions of Lebanon, including the capital, Beirut. Subsequently, a decision was made to expand the ground operation.
According to data from the Lebanese Ministry of Health, the number of people who have lost their lives in the attacks launched by Israel since March 2 has risen to 850, while the number of injured has reached 2,105. Internal displacement in the country has also reached serious proportions; according to a statement by the Disaster Management unit affiliated with the Lebanese government, the official number of those forced to leave their homes has exceeded 830,000.
It is anticipated that Israel's actions toward Lebanon will significantly increase tension in the region. The decision will be clarified with official approval from the government in the coming days.
