Israeli historian Ilan Pappe: 'The darkest moment in Palestinian history'

Israeli historian Professor Ilan Pappe stated that Israel's attacks on Gaza "could be the darkest moment in Palestinian history," adding, "What is happening will go down in history as the beginning of the end of the Zionist project."

Pappe made these remarks to the UK-based Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC) regarding Israel's ongoing attacks in Gaza.

Emphasizing that "what is happening will go down in history as the beginning of the end of the Zionist project," Pappe underscored that such projects become "more cruel, ruthless, and full of rage than ever before" when they are fighting for their existence.

Pappe stated, "People will likely say that these times are the darkest moment in Palestinian history. But this darkness is the darkness before the dawn."

Stating that the fundamental moral, economic, and military infrastructure that holds Israel together and enables it to oppress Palestinians has been significantly shaken, Pappe expressed that this will continue in the future.

Drawing attention to the shift in the positions of governments in the Global South and within Jewish communities, Pappe pointed out that the possibilities for forming a more effective alliance than in the past to support Palestinians worldwide are higher.

Pappe also noted that even before October 7, 2023, Israeli society was one that did not want Palestinians to live in humane conditions, could not accept their humanity, and was not very open to outside criticism.
