Japan's reaction to China and Russia's military exercise: We are monitoring with concern

According to reports from Japan's public broadcaster NHK, Hayashi stated in his remarks to reporters that the Tokyo administration views the exercise to be held by China and Russia as an effort by the two countries to enhance their military cooperation.

Stating that Japan is monitoring the exercise in question with "concern," Hayashi noted that the government will continue to collect and analyze information regarding the exercise.

In a statement from the Chinese Ministry of Defense, it was announced that the naval and air forces of China and Russia would begin a joint military exercise in the Sea of Japan (East Sea) and the Sea of Okhotsk in the Western Pacific.

AIMING TO 'STRENGTHEN JOINT RESPONSE CAPABILITY'

The statement noted that the exercise, titled "Northern/Interaction-2024," aims to "deepen strategic coordination between the two countries' militaries and strengthen the ability to respond jointly to security threats."

The military activity in the region is noteworthy as it takes place during a period of tension between China and Japan stemming from airspace and territorial water violations.

On August 26, Japan reported that a Chinese military "Y-9" type aircraft had entered Japanese airspace off the Danjo Islands in the East China Sea.

On the other hand, it was recorded that a Chinese research vessel had entered Japanese territorial waters near Kuchinoerabu Island, located in the Tokara Strait south of Japan.

The Tokyo administration protested China through diplomatic channels in both incidents.
