Kristalina Georgieva re-elected as IMF Managing Director

In a statement released by the IMF, it was reported that the Executive Board has selected Georgieva to serve a second five-year term as IMF Managing Director, effective October 1.

The statement, which noted that the decision was made unanimously, highlighted appreciation for Georgieva's "strong and agile" leadership in navigating a series of major global shocks during her tenure.

The statement further expressed that the board focused on Georgieva's commitment to strengthening the fund's support for its members through effective policy advice, capacity development, and financing.

Following her re-election as IMF Managing Director, Georgieva stated in a press release that she is honored to continue serving as Managing Director for a second five-year term.

Pointing out that the IMF has helped member countries cope with successive shocks in recent years, including the pandemic, wars and conflicts, and the cost-of-living crisis, Georgieva noted that she has also accelerated work on climate change, fragility and conflict, and digital transformation, in parallel with their increasing importance for macroeconomic and financial stability, growth, and employment.

Georgieva stated that the IMF's financial support, policy advice, and capacity development efforts contribute to countries' ability to cope with high uncertainty and sudden shifts in economic conditions, adding that they will continue to strive to create a more "effective, incisive, and welcoming" environment for countries to come together and overcome global challenges.

Georgieva, a Bulgarian national, has been serving as IMF Managing Director since 2019.

Georgieva previously held various positions at the World Bank and the European Commission.

Georgieva, whose five-year term ends on September 30, was the sole candidate nominated in the selection process for the fund's next leader.
