Macron announces: Will he resign?
French President Emmanuel Macron has stated that he will not resign "regardless of the outcome" of the snap general elections he announced for June 30-July 7, following the far-right's landslide victory in his country during the European Parliament (EP) elections.
Emmanuel Macron attempted to explain why he felt the need for the decision to hold snap general elections in an interview with the newspaper Le Figaro.
Emphasizing that he would not accept a demand for his resignation even if the far-right National Rally (RN) party were to win the general elections, Macron stated, "It is not the RN that writes the Constitution. Regardless of the outcome, the institutions are clear, and the place of the president is clear. This is an abstract issue for me."
Macron said that "politics is a dynamic" and that he does not believe in polls, adding, "We should not look at the results obtained for each constituency in light of the results obtained in the EP elections."
Regarding his decision to dissolve parliament, Macron argued that "this was the right decision for the good of the country," and maintained that he is "only thinking of France."
"Dissolution is the clearest, most radical, and most powerful gesture. It is a gesture of great trust in the French people," said Macron, stating that he made the decision for snap elections "to clarify the situation."
Macron called on the French people to "not be afraid and go vote."
In the French leg of the EP elections, the far-right RN took first place by a wide margin with 31.37% of the vote, while Macron's Renaissance party came in second with 14.60%.
Macron had announced his decision to dissolve parliament and head to snap elections immediately after the EP election results were declared.
