Macron calls on Israel to stop bombing civilians

In an exclusive interview with the British broadcaster BBC, Macron said that a ceasefire in Gaza would be in Israel's best interest.

Reminding that France has clearly condemned Hamas's attacks on Israel, Macron responded to the fact that some countries, such as the US and the UK, advocate for humanitarian pauses in the conflict but have not joined calls for a ceasefire by saying, "I hope they will (call for a ceasefire)."

Stating that he was one of the first leaders to call the Israeli President and Prime Minister on October 7, Macron said, "On the first day, we said this was a fight against terrorism. Because it is being conducted by a democracy, it must comply with international rules, the rules of war, and international humanitarian law. However, as the days passed, we began to see civilians in Gaza being continuously bombed."

Emphasizing that a ceasefire is the only solution available, Macron responded to the question of whether Israel is complying with international rules by saying, "There can be no justification for attacking civilians."

"WE ARE CALLING ON ISRAEL TO STOP"

Macron answered the question, "Is Israel violating international humanitarian law?" with the following words:

"As a partner and friend, I say that one month after a terrorist attack, if you try to deal with it in this way, I think you become the one who is condemned and guilty.

Today, civilians are being bombed. Babies, women, and the elderly are being bombed and killed. There is no justification or legitimacy for this. Therefore, we are calling on Israel to stop. I am not a judge; I am a head of state. I am reminding everyone of international law and calling for a ceasefire."

Macron added that Israel's bombing of Gaza is causing negative sentiments in the region that will prolong the conflict.

Commenting on the march against antisemitism to be held in the country on Sunday, Macron highlighted that France is one of the European countries with the largest Muslim and Jewish populations, and said that all French people should unite against antisemitism and share in the pain experienced by Palestinians.
