Macron calls Pezeshkian to demand 'release'
In a phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, French President Emmanuel Macron demanded the release of two French citizens who have been detained in Iran since 2022.
French President Emmanuel Macron made a statement on his social media account regarding his phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
Macron stated, "I spoke with the President of Iran by phone today. During the call, I delivered messages regarding ending the detention of our imprisoned citizens Cecile Kohler and Jacques Paris, protecting our citizens and facilities in Iran that should not be subject to any threats, adhering to the ceasefire established to ensure peace in the region, returning to the table to continue discussing issues related to ballistic and nuclear missiles, supporting the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), and the rapid resumption of the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) work in Iran to ensure full transparency."
The French President added, "I will continue my efforts in the coming days to achieve these goals."
Cecile Kohler and Jacques Paris have been detained in Iran since May 2022 on espionage charges. The families of Kohler and Paris believe their relatives are being held in Evin Prison in Iran's capital, Tehran. Following Israel's strikes on Iran on June 23, which hit the aforementioned prison, the families expressed concern for their relatives from whom they had not heard, and demanded proof from Iranian authorities regarding their well-being.
