Major crime rates drop in New York

New York City Mayor Eric Adams and New York Police Department (NYPD) Commissioner Jessica Tisch held a press conference regarding crime rates in the city in 2024.

During the meeting, it was reported that there was a 5 percent decrease in major crime rates in the city, and it was announced that 200 additional police officers would be deployed for subway security. While the decline in murders and shootings led the overall drop in crime rates, it was emphasized that there was an increase in some types of crime.

DECREASE IN MURDERS AND SHOOTINGS

While the number of murders in New York fell from 391 in 2023 to 377 in 2024, 48 fewer people were recorded as having been shot. Tisch stated, "This means 3,362 fewer major crime incidents compared to the previous year. These are not just numbers; this means thousands of people who were not harmed by criminals," and announced that major crime rates in the subway system and housing projects also fell by 5 percent.

SECURITY MEASURES ARE BEING INCREASED

Crime incidents in the New York subway have led to a sense of insecurity among the public. The biggest reaction was to the fatal burning of a homeless woman in Coney Island last month. Tisch stated that 78 percent of crimes committed in the subway occur on trains or platforms and announced that new police officers would be assigned to patrol these areas.

INCREASE IN RECIDIVISM RATES

Tisch expressed that the sharp increase in recidivism rates is concerning, noting that since 2018, there has been a significant increase in the number of suspects arrested three or more times for the same crime. It was emphasized that suspects often commit crimes again after being released on bail.

Despite the overall decline in major crime rates, there was an increase in rape and felony assault crimes. While a 19 percent increase in rape rates is notable, attacks by domestic partners account for a large portion of this increase. Tisch stated that one reason for the increase is the legal expansion of the definition of rape in New York State. A 5 percent increase was also seen in felony assaults.

"THEY NEED TO BE KEPT OFF THE STREETS"

Mayor Adams emphasized that more steps need to be taken regarding subway security. The city administration has assigned 200 new police officers, paid directly despite overtime controls, to increase security in the subway. This number is planned to be increased to one thousand in the summer months.

Criticizing the increase in recidivism rates, Mayor Adams said he would continue to push for the revision of criminal justice reforms that went into effect in 2020, stating, "I am not criticizing bail reform, but those who are arrested again and again for the same crime need to be kept off the streets."

Adams stated that the public's perception of safety has been damaged, saying, "A citizen is robbed on Monday and a few days later sees the same person robbing their neighbor. This situation destroys the feeling that our city cares about people."

NEW APPROACHES

The city administration plans to implement new strategies to reduce crime rates. 650 police officers will be assigned to areas designated as "high-crime areas" in different parts of the city, and this number will be increased to one thousand in the summer months. This method, applied on Fulton Street in downtown Brooklyn, has led to a decrease in retail thefts.

While Adams and the NYPD view the decline in crime rates as a positive development, they stated that they will work harder to increase security and gain the public's trust.
