Man burned to death by mob in Pakistan over alleged desecration of the Quran

In Pakistan, a man was burned to death by a mob on the grounds that he had disrespected the Quran. According to a report by AFP, the man, who was being held at a police station for his own safety, was seized by the crowd and subsequently killed.

A police source from the Swat region speaking to AFP said, "On the evening of the 20th, in the city of Madyan, a man was apprehended by local residents on the grounds that he had burned the Quran. The police intervened, rescued the individual, and brought him to a local police station." It was also noted that the individual was not from the region.

The same police source explained that the police fired warning shots into the air to disperse the angry crowd, but this only further enraged the people, and the group, which outnumbered the police, dragged the man out of the station and beat him with sticks.

They added that the man was then doused with oil and set on fire.

Another regional official confirmed the events, stating that after the man was killed, the angry mob pelted the police with stones, forcing the police to abandon the station.

Insulting religious values is a highly sensitive issue in Pakistan, and accusations regarding this matter can lead to mobs resorting directly to violence.

In May, a Christian in the Punjab region was lynched by a mob on the grounds that he had burned the Quran; he lost his life in June due to the injuries he sustained.

Also in the same region, in February 2023, a Muslim man was beaten to death for allegedly disrespecting the holy book.
