Massive US military deployment to Latin America: All eyes on the Venezuelan coast
According to a report by The Washington Post, the US has sent warships to Latin America as part of an operation launched against drug cartels. The decision was made on the instructions of Trump. Venezuelan leader Maduro responded harshly, saying, "No one should touch our territory."
According to The Washington Post, unnamed officials from the US Department of Defense announced that warships have been sent to the region as part of an anti-drug operation in Latin America.
It was stated that the ships would be deployed in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, near Central and South American countries.
MASSIVE SUPPORT FOR THE OPERATION: 7 WARSHIPS
Officials stated that the ships sent include 3 destroyers, 2 landing platform docks, 1 amphibious assault ship, 1 fast combat support ship, and 1 littoral combat ship (LCS).
It was argued that the destroyers USS Gravely, USS Jason Dunham, and USS Sampson were "not very close" to the Venezuelan coast. However, no information was shared regarding whether the ships had reached the region.
It was noted that the crews include teams authorized to make arrests as part of drug operations.
TRUMP HAD MADE THE DECISION
US President Donald Trump had previously requested, through a decree he signed, that the military be used more and more effectively to combat drug cartels originating from Latin America on the ground.
Speaking to CNN, senior military officials announced that it had been decided to send 4,000 marines to the region following this instruction.
Trump had also ordered the deployment of 3 warships off the coast of Venezuela on August 15.
HARSH MESSAGE FROM MADURO: "DO NOT TOUCH OUR TERRITORY"
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro reacted harshly to the US sending warships to the Caribbean Sea. Maduro stated, "No one should attempt to touch Venezuelan territory."
Maduro also announced that more than 4.5 million militia members would be deployed across the country after the US increased the "reward for information" leading to his arrest.
