Medvedev on nuclear war: 'F-16s increase the threat'

Dmitry Medvedev spoke to the press to evaluate NATO's decision to send F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine. Stating that the F-16s could cause the war to spiral out of control, Medvedev issued a warning regarding the danger of nuclear war.

The British military had begun training 16 Ukrainian pilots as a starting point to enable them to use F-16 jets. So far, the Netherlands and Denmark have announced that they will donate F-16 jets to Ukraine. While Denmark stated it would donate 19 aircraft, the Netherlands did not provide a specific figure. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg had stated that the aircraft would be delivered to Ukraine by August.

As the program initiated by NATO to donate F-16s to Ukraine continues, a notable statement has come from the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev.

Speaking to Russia's state news agency TASS, Medvedev said, "The possibility of an accidental, miscalculated nuclear war should not be underestimated; this is why the arming of Ukraine is dangerous, and F-16s increase the threat."

Stating that the F-16s could trigger a 'chain of events that no one wants,' Medvedev emphasized that it is not technically possible for F-16s to take off from any facility within Ukraine.

Medvedev continued his remarks: "So, if these aircraft take off from a NATO base, how do we define this situation? An attack on Russia. It is better if I do not say what will happen after that."

In his statement, Medvedev noted that the situation is not yet bad enough to require fleeing to nuclear bunkers, while adding that they are facing a problem worse than the Cuban Missile Crisis.
