Mexican President Obrador suspends relations with US and Canadian ambassadors

Speaking at his daily press conference at the National Palace in Mexico City, Obrador announced that relations with the US and Canadian ambassadors, who had criticized the judicial reform proposed in the country, have been suspended for the time being.

Emphasizing that they do not interfere in the internal affairs of any country, Obrador stated, "Our relationship with US Ambassador Ken Salazar is good, but it is currently paused. We will not rush. They need to learn to respect Mexico's sovereignty. Because we will not tell them what is right or wrong either. We expect mutual respect and understanding."

Mexican President Obrador noted that the suspension of relations with the US and Canadian ambassadors has nothing to do with their central governments, adding that relations would continue as before if both ambassadors show the necessary respect for Mexico's independence.

The US and Canadian embassies had previously criticized Obrador's proposed judicial reform. US Ambassador Salazar had issued a statement claiming that the reform, which envisions the election of judges by popular vote, poses a "major risk to the functioning of Mexican democracy."

JUDICIAL REFORM

The judicial reform proposed by President Obrador includes the election of judges through public voting, with candidates to be nominated by Congress and the judiciary.

Analysts, judges, and international observers, however, are concerned that this situation will fill the courts with inexperienced and politically biased judges.
